Firefighters Face High Cancer Risks – The Ontario FP Grant Provides Crucial Support

Firefighters put their lives on the line daily, not just in the face of fire but also from the lingering effects of the job. One of the most pressing concerns is the high rate of cancer among firefighters, linked to exposure to hazardous materials. In response to this, the Ontario government has introduced the Fire Protection (FP) Grant for 2024-25, specifically targeting cancer prevention. This grant is an opportunity for fire departments across Ontario to enhance firefighter safety through essential equipment and infrastructure.

Understanding the Need for Cancer Prevention in Firefighting

Studies show that firefighters are up to four times more likely to develop cancer compared to the general population. Contaminated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a primary source of exposure to hazardous chemicals and biological contaminants, which can remain on gear even after the fire is out.

The FP Grant aims to equip fire departments with the necessary tools to reduce these risks, significantly lowering the chances of developing life-threatening illnesses.

Key Equipment Eligible for FP Grant Funding

Several types of equipment are eligible for funding under the FP Grant, including:

SCBA and Personal SCBA Facepieces

Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and personal SCBA facepieces provide breathable air in hazardous environments, preventing exposure to toxic fumes and smoke. The FP Grant ensures fire departments can purchase additional SCBAs and facepieces, allowing for better rotation and reduced contamination risks.

Bunker Gear Extractors

These machines thoroughly clean firefighter gear, removing harmful substances that cling to fabrics after fires. The grant ensures departments can keep gear in top condition, reducing the risk of exposure to carcinogens.

Field Decontamination Kits

These kits, which include hoses, nozzles, brushes, and decontamination wipes, allow firefighters to remove contaminants immediately after exposure, significantly reducing long-term health risks.

Infrastructure Improvements for Enhanced Safety

The grant also supports minor infrastructure improvements, such as installing shower and decontamination facilities at fire stations, ensuring firefighters can clean off hazardous substances before leaving the station.

Broadband and Internet Connectivity

Reliable internet access is essential for modern firefighting operations. The grant covers improvements to broadband and internet connectivity, enabling fire departments to better coordinate and access real-time information.

The Grant Application Process: Simple and Effective

The application process for the FP Grant is designed to be straightforward. Fire departments are encouraged to submit proposals covering multiple eligible projects to maximize the grant’s impact. Funding is allocated based on the number of active fire stations within a municipality, ranging from $8,000 to $10,000 per station.

Prioritizing Health and Safety

The FP Grant is a vital resource that enables fire departments to take proactive steps in cancer prevention. By investing in essential equipment and infrastructure, fire departments can better protect their members from job-related health risks.

Applications for the 2024-2025 Fire Protection Grant are now open and will be accepted until September 5 at 5 p.m. EST.

Applications must be submitted through the Transfer Payment Ontario system: https://www.app.grants.gov.on.ca/tpon/psLogin
